When an NBC 10 viewer received a sales tax refund this week, she noticed some curious signatories at the bottom of the check: Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney.
The names of Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner and State Controller Peter Keenan should have been on the check, but a technical glitch is to blame.
“As a result of a technical error in the Division of Taxation’s automated refund check printing system, approximately 176 checks with invalid signature lines were printed and mailed to taxpayers on Monday 7/27/2020. The invalid signature lines were incorrectly sourced from the Division’s test print files,” said Jade Borgeson, Chief of Staff for the Department of Revenue.
he checks were related to various business taxes, including sales tax, corporate and tax credit refunds. The majority were corporation tax refunds.
The Department of Revenue told the NBC 10 I-Team that it is reaching out to impacted taxpayers and apologized for any inconvenience the error caused.
