NASA’s “WALL-E” satellite has mysteriously gone silent after zooming past Mars and the federal government area company isn’t positive why.

The small satellite (often called a dice satellite or cubesat) is without doubt one of the first two to go away Earth’s orbit. The satellites haven’t communicated with the federal government area company for greater than a month, NASA mentioned on Tuesday. The two MarCO spacecraft (MarCO-A and MarCO-B) had been launched from Earth in May 2018 and it’s potential that the gadgets could have merely reached their limits.

“This mission was always about pushing the limits of miniaturized technology and seeing just how far it could take us,” Andy Klesh, the mission’s chief engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), said in a statement. “We’ve put a stake in the ground. Future CubeSats might go even farther.”

The launch of the 2 MarCO (quick for Mars Cube One) spacecraft was an indication mission and completed along with the InSight lander to point out the prowess of those small satellites. They had been nicknamed WALL-E and EVE after the Pixar characters of the identical names and had been final heard from on Dec. 29 and Jan. 4, respectively.

The InSight lander landed successfully on the floor of the Red Planet on Nov. 26, ending a journey that lasted six months and greater than 300 million miles.

NASA mentioned that based mostly on trajectory calculations, WALL-E is greater than 1 million miles past Mars, whereas EVE is nearly 2 million miles past the Red Planet.
