Wayne LaPierre, the Chief Executive and Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association, tweeted this out tonight:

I spoke to the president in the present day. We mentioned the greatest methods to stop some of these tragedies. @realDonaldTrump is a powerful #2A President and helps our Right to Keep and Bear Arms! – Wayne LaPierre

President Trump advised the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre that common background checks are off the desk in upcoming discussions on defending Americans from mass shooters.

    The Daily Beast reported:

President Trump reportedly known as embattled NRA chief govt Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday to inform him common background checks had been off the desk as a legislative response to the shootings in El Paso and Dayton.

The name, reported by The Atlantic, is the newest, and most direct, case of Trump backing away from a proposal that he appeared to embrace in the aftermath of these two latest mass shootings. And it left officers on the Hill scrambling for solutions. One workplace that has consulted with the White House on background checks laws mentioned that they’d not been knowledgeable that the president was shelving the thought, regardless of the report.
