A coal preparation facility breached Tuesday, sending over 100,000 gallons of coal liquid waste leaked from a West Virginia coal preparation facility and into the nearby water supply, officials have announced. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) opened an investigation into a coal slurry spill Tuesday morning. The slurry is made up solid and liquid waste that is created as a by-product of the coal mining process.

Researchers recently detected a highly sophisticated cyber spying operation, active since 2007, that targeted governments, diplomats, and embassies before it was razed last month. Kaspersky Labs in Russia identified the attack as “The Mask,” and guessed that the operation most likely comes from a Spanish-speaking nation state, based on its advanced characteristics and Spanish language snippets in its malware. Strontium-90 is a radioactive isotope of strontium produced by nuclear fission with a half-life of 28.8 years. The legal standard for strontium emissions is 30 becquerels per liter. Exposure to strontium-90 can cause bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues, and leukemia.
The state of California has introduced a bill that would require mobile devices to have a ‘kill switch’ which would render them inoperable and impossible to reset if stolen. If passed, Senate Bill 962 would require every smartphone sold in or shipped to California to have the mechanism installed by as early as January 2015, with smartphone manufacturers given until June of this year to come up with solutions for integrating the technology into their devices.
A 16-year-old Virginia girl was charged with a child porn felony for tweeting her own naked pictures. The girl, whose name has not been revealed, was charged as a juvenile with “possession, reproduction, distribution, solicitation and facilitation of child pornography,” Stephanie Williams-Ortery of James City County Police told the Huffington Post.

A former contractor for the United States government will plead guilty to leaking secret information to a Fox News reporter, his attorney said Friday, and will likely serve 13 months in prison as a result. The lawyer for Stephen Kim, a 46-year-old former contract analyst for the US Department of State, told District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly on Friday that their client is ready to plead guilty to one count of unauthorized disclosure of secret government information, Reuters reported that afternoon.
