As the United States prepares to make its grand exit from Afghanistan at the end of next year, the Pentagon is planning on spending at least $3 billion just to send leftover equipment back to the US. A former FBI agent has agreed to plead guilty to divulging secret government information about a supposed bomb plot in Yemen to the Associated Press, the US Department of Justice said Monday. Donald John Sachtleben agreed to a sentence of three years and seven months for the leak, as part of a plea agreement filed in the US District Court in Indiana. A separate sentence for unrelated child pornography charges was included, according to the Justice Department (DOJ).

California law will require web companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google to scrub the online activity of users under 18, if the minors request it. The law, which is the first of its kind, is scheduled to go into effect in 2015. Russia has launched a criminal case into suspected piracy on the high seas over Greenpeace activists scaling an Arctic offshore oil rig before being arrested by border guards. The organization dismissed the allegations as ‘absurd’. Greenpeace staged a protest at the Prirazlomnaya oil rig in the Barents Sea last week, saying that if an oil spill happened there it would cause enormous damage to the environment. A border guard unit of the Russian Federal Security service arrested 30 activists, including the two who scaled the installation, and towed the ship to the shore.

A European hacker group has announced a simple, replicable method for spoofing Apple’s TouchID fingerprint authentication system. “A fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface, was enough to create a fake finger that could unlock an iPhone 5s secured with TouchID,” claims the Chaos Computer Club, which demonstrated the hack in a video. The technique is based on previous methods for spoofing fingerprint authentication systems, and needed only minor adaptation to be applied to the iPhone’s unusually high-resolution scanner. The conservatives beat their main rival, the Social Democrats (SPD), which received 25.7 percent of the votes, according to preliminary final results.
