National Guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed by elements of a Para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw. Speaking after the clash, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement.

41 students and an English teacher have been killed in an Islamic extremist attack on a boarding school in northeast Nigeria. Some students were burned alive, according to survivors being treated for burn and gunshot wounds. “We received 42 dead bodies of students and other staff of Government Secondary School [in] Mamudo last night. Some of them had gunshot wounds while many of them had burns and ruptured tissues,” Haliru Aliyu of the Potiskum General Hospital told AFP.

At the request of law enforcement agencies, postal workers take pictures of the letters and packages before they are delivered, the New York Times reported. The information is then stored for an indefinite period of time in the event a law enforcement official requests it. Each year, tens of thousands of pieces of mail are subjected to further scrutiny.

A neighborhood on the westside of the valley was locked down for several hours Thursday night. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told 8 News NOW that someone was firing gunshots into the air Thursday night on the 6200 block of Ilanos near Lake Mead Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive. That person was arrested but the gun was not found. Metro believes the gun is in a home in the area or a vehicle. Police obtained a search warrant from the District Attorney to put the neighborhood on lock down while they looked for the gun.
An image of the hidden microphone used to bug an office in Ecuador’s London embassy, where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been living for over a year, was revealed by Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino during a press conference Wednesday. Patino told reporters the recording device was found beneath a desk in the office belonging to Ana Alban, the Ecuadorean Ambassador to the United Kingdom, according to Reuters.
