Police say looters took advantage of the loss of power due to Hurricane Sandy to burglarize homes and business during a one-week period in the township.
Three businesses were burglarized, including a liquor store where thieves stole bottles of whiskey, said Carteret police Chief John Pieczyski.
Burglars also broke into a gas station and stole packs of cigarettes, Pieczyski said.
A third business was burglarized in the Carteret Shopping Center at 801 Roosevelt Ave., the chief said.
Another four other crimes occurred at homes in the community, the chief said.
“These all occurred during a one-week period during and after the storm,” Pieczyski said.
No arrests have been made. “These are all open investigations,” the chief said.
