It is so rare it has been dubbed the ‘Unicorn of the Sea’ and can grow up to 30 metres long – the equivalent of two double-decker buses laid end-to-end. Its hollow, translucent, cylindrical body is made up of thousands of tiny clones called zooids that pull water through its tubes and feed on plankton before pushing the filtered water back out.

A strong undersea earthquake has hit the same northeastern region of Japan that was devastated by a deadly 2011 tsunami. No damage or injuries have been reported in the affected area, including the Fukushima prefecture. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Miyagi prefecture on Sunday. The epicenter was 50 kilometers below the seabed. No tsunami warning was issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has filed a petition to the US Supreme Court, asking it to allow licensed gun dealers to sell handguns to youths between the ages of 18 and 21. The appeal filed by the NRA and two 19-year olds is a fresh attempt to overturn a 1968 law which bars federally licensed dealers from selling handguns and handgun ammunition to people between ages 18 and 21.
Texas has executed more than 500 inmates over the past three decades, but now the Lone Star State is running out of its supply of lethal injection drugs and is scrambling to find an alternative. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Thursday announced that its supply of pentobarbital expires in September, and the department has no alternative to the lethal, single-dose drug with which it executes its death row prisoners.

And that ancient man likely shared the planet with the mother of all women. The findings, detailed Thursday, Aug. 1, in the journal Science, come from the most complete analysis of the male sex chromosome, or the Y chromosome, to date. The results overturn earlier research, which suggested that men’s most recent common ancestor lived just 50,000 to 60,000 years ago.
Marijuana has been legalized for medicinal use in Illinois, making it the twentieth state in the US that permits individuals with serious diseases, including HIV and multiple sclerosis, to buy the drug in limited quantities. The law, signed Thursday, goes into effect on January 1, 2014 and enacts regulations considered to be among the toughest used by states that have legalized medical marijuana.
